The JaxKids Book Club is a free early literacy program, for all 4-year olds in Jacksonville. The Club aims to improve school readiness skills of children the summer prior to entering kindergarten. It utilizes public-private partnerships to get high-quality books into the homes of all of Jacksonville’s 4-year olds and give parents practical tools to help their children become early learners. The goal is to encourage families to instill literacy as a core value in the home and increase family awareness of the importance of reading with their children every day. Since its inception in 2004, the JaxKids Book Club has provided more than 1,100,000 free books to over 100,000 4–year-olds throughout the city. As a national model, 19 states and 40 municipalities have consulted with Jacksonville officials to create similar programs that promote early literacy.
Each Book Club member receives a free clear reusable book bag filled with a set of 7 age-appropriate books, written about various historical, geographical and cultural aspects in Jacksonville. The books will be given out before summer begins to ensure children have quality books in their homes to help prevent summer learning loss.
The JaxKids Book Club would like to thank the following corporations who have shown that literacy and putting children first is a priority for Jacksonville. Without the generous support of these corporations, the program would not be in existence today.
